Teatru Manoel re-opens, to socially distanced audiences
Teatru Manoel, Malta’s iconic theatre in the heart of Valletta is re-opening its doors after months of closure, with a new programme and new guidelines.
The theatre will be opening under strict social-distancing rules, which means that theatre goers will be expected to maintain a two metre distance between each other at all times. Yes, that includes in the bathroom.
“We are delighted to be, at last, re-opening the doors at the Teatru Manoel to audiences eager to enjoy the atmosphere again of this unique theatrical institution,” said artistic director Kenneth Zammit Tabona.
With the first show set for no later than 23 October, a team of driven individuals have been working hard to set the stage for its return.
“We have been planning for this moment behind the scenes for months, earlier this year releasing an open call for local artists to submit ideas and projects for a new COVID-friendly programme. The first two exciting new shows created as a result will be a fitting way to celebrate the socially-distanced reopening of the Manoel.”
what kind of guidelines should we expect?
Well, it’s simple really. Firstly, it goes without saying that you should stay home if you’re experiencing any COVID-19 related symptoms, or have been in direct contact with a positive case, in the 14 days leading up to the event.
Also, the theatre discouraged the use of public transport when travelling to the event, and purchasing tickets online, as opposed to from the booking office.
Oh and another thing, theatre-goers are obliged to wear a face mask at all times, as soon as you step foot in the building.
Upon arrival to the theatre, join the queue, while maintaining a safe distance from others, and a staff member will check your temperature (and your ticket too) and ask that you sanitise your hands before entering.
what kind of guidelines should we expect?
The first show, on 23 October, will be a recital by Soprano Nicola Said. She’ll be singing a beautiful programme of pieces by Samuel Barber, Arthus Bliss and Alban Berg, accompanied by pianist Christine Zerafa.
Guest musicians at the event will also include Godfrey Mifsud on the clarinet, Nadine Galea and Stefan Calleja on the violin and Desiree Quintano playing the cello.
Next up: ROOTS by Moveo Dance Company on 31 October; a triple of bill of dance and live music, in a collaboration between brilliant local artists, including Diane Portelli, Dorian Mallia, Tricia Dawn Williams and Francesca Tranter.
Teatru Manoel has also recorded several performances, which will be streamed online for our viewing pleasure, with artists like the band Skald, alongside author Trevor Zahra and actress Teresa Gauci. Also, a violin concerto by violinist Nadine Galea alongside pianist Christine Zerafa and a brand spanking new Toi Toi recital series, featuring artists like Nicola Said, Clare Ghido, Dorothy Bezzina, Luis Agiular and Julie James.
