First Moderna vaccine consignment arrives

For those interested in the COVID-19 vaccine race, we have news for you! The first consignment of the Moderna vaccine arrived on the island early this morning.

According to Air Malta, the first shipment arrived from Brussels and more are expected to arrive in the coming weeks. The airline added that it had spent the last month making all the necessary preparations to be able to carry the consignments. They did this by acquiring the necessary certification, as well as by updating their operational processes and procedures. Due to the changes made, the airline is able to use the passengers’ cabin to carry humanitarian and medical equipment, as well as supplies efficiently.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this global effort to transport this vaccine and help our islands achieve immunity against this disease, which has caused so much suffering to the world’s population,” said David D. Curmi, the airline’s executive chairman.

The Moderna vaccine was approved by the European Medicines Agency just last week, making it the second COVID-19 vaccine to be approved in the European Union. In addition, Malta already has an order of 100,000 vaccines from Moderna.

Health Minister Chris Fearne said that the government has been working tirelessly since last year to make sure they get their hands on enough doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. He added that Malta would be the first to receive the Moderna vaccine.

The aim, according to the Minister, was to have two-thirds of the population inoculated by the Pfizer and BioNTech and Moderna vaccines by September 2021. He vowed that efforts were being made to speed up the timelines by acquiring even more doses.
