German TV series films in Malta for the third time

The German TV series Das Boot has chosen none other than Malta as its filming location for a third time, increasing its production days on the island from 72 to 120!

The production is filming in various locations around the Maltese Islands including the Malta Film Studios, Fort Ricasoli, the AFM Barracks, San Anton Gardens, Kalkara, Valletta, Mdina, Marsa, Paola and Mellieħa! Not to mention that Das Boot’s production in Malta is comprised of over 800 production crew, cast and extras.

The story of Das Boot begins in the midst of World War II. It’s produced by Sky One and is a sequel to the 19781 West German war film of the same name. The plot follows a young submarine crew on a dangerous surveillance mission, as the Resistance begins to gain influence at the French port of La Rochelle. As the 40 young men take on their first mission, they are pushed to the limit, as tensions rise and loyalties begin to shatter. Meanwhile, at the port of La Rochelle, the world of Simone Strasser spirals out of control as she is engulfed in a dangerous liaison and forbidden love, torn between her loyalty for Germany and the Resistance.

Johann Grech, Malta Film Commissioner, said that the production spent €3,000,000 per year during the first and second series, and is now spending over €7,000,000 to produce its third series in Malta.

“Though this time wasn’t easy due to COVID, we still managed to secure Das Boot in Malta because we have always been pro-active in our determination to make things happen for our film industry. Das Boot is the second big TV series shooting in Malta this year. The second month, the second production,” he said.

Moritz Polter, executive producer of Das Boot, thanked the Malta Film Commission under the stewardship of Johann Grech for their commitment and support for the production to take place in Malta. Polter added that he feels proud that Das Boot is filming for the third time on the Islands and is looking forward to filming the fourth! He made reference to the Soundstage project and mentioned that Malta will be a more attractive offer to film-makers.

Das Boot is the second major TV series to shoot in Malta this year, in spite of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The highly anticipated Apple TV series Foundation was filming here for its debut series set to hit the streaming platform later on this year.
