Malta’s Flag Bearers chosen for Tokyo Olympics

Olympians Eleanor Bezzina and Andrew Chetcuti will be carrying the Maltese flag during the opening ceremony on the 23rd July

Two athletes, swimmer Andrew Chetcuti and indoor pistol shooter Eleanor Bezzina have been selected as Malta’s flag bearers at the opening and closing ceremony of the Olympics in Tokyo this summer.

Bezzina and Chetcuti have multiple Games appearances to their name and according, to The Malta Olympic Committee, both athletes were selected based on their previous representation of Malta at the Olympics.

This is Bezzina’s second appearance in the Olympic Games, having competed in Rio in 2016.  Eleanor will be competing in the 10m Air-Pistol and 25m Sport Pistol events.

Chetcuti has represented Malta in London in 2012 and in Rio in 201, making this year’s Tokyo games his third consecutive Olympic appearance, where he will once again compete in the 100m freestyle event.

The Maltese contingent in Tokyo will consist of Carla Scicluna (Athletics), Matthew Abela (Badminton), Eleanor Bezzina (Shooting), Andrew Chetcuti, Sasha Gatt (Swimming) and Yazmin Zammit Stevens (Weightlifting). Team Malta will be led by Chef de Mission Dr. Lucienne Attard. Assisting the athletes will also be MOC Officials Ivan Balzan, Maria Vella-Galea, Dr. Kirill Micallef Stafrace and physiotherapist, Milos Stanisavljevic.
