Malta to get its first carbon-neutral park
Rinella Garden, which is located in the south of Malta in Kalkara, will be home to Malta’s first carbon-neutral park, complete with self-sufficient irrigation systems and an emissions-free experience.
The garden will be fully equipped, with solar panels built into the ground, which will serve to generate electricity for the garden’s irrigation system and lights. Water reservoirs will also be built and used for full self-sufficiency. The project, which was unveiled by Miriam Dalli, sustainable development minister and Clyde Caruana, finance minister, during a press conference yesterday, is slated to be finished in 2022.
According to Dalli, the garden forms part of a group of projects that will help the islands in their path towards their sustainable development goals. She went on to thank the Coca Cola foundation for their help in financing the project.
Caruana said that the Rinella Garden project will see no less than a million spent to regenerate the area. He added that his ministry will be allocating funds towards more open spaces in the island’s southern regions, noting that the government is just a few months away from the next budget. Caruana said that the focus will be on aesthetics, with more investment in parks.
