Mayor Abela Reflects on the Success of Għaxaq Carnival 2024
Just a few weeks ago, the vibrant streets of Għaxaq were filled with revelry and cheer as the village celebrated yet another successful carnival under the leadership of Mayor Darren Abela. Talking to Oh My Malta and reflecting on the popular festivities, Abela attributed the success of this year’s carnival to a combination of factors that have been carefully nurtured over the years.
One of the key factors behind the success of the Għaxaq Carnival was the “substantial investment by the local council to preserve its unique traditional essence”. Abela emphasised the importance of bringing together various local organisations to participate in the carnival, ensuring a diverse and engaging celebration that appealed to residents and visitors alike.
Speaking to Oh My Malta, Abela explained the measures taken to ensure the rising popularity of the Għaxaq Carnival each year included a strategic advertising campaign that portrayed the event as a festival of art, innovation, imagination, and creative ideas. This approach has significantly contributed to the increasing popularity of the carnival, drawing larger crowds and enhancing its reputation as a must-visit cultural event.
When asked about the spontaneous carnival’s comparison to the renowned Nadur Carnival in Gozo, Abela highlighted the distinct styles and goals of each celebration, noting that they are not in competition. “While the Nadur Carnival may attract a different audience with its unique features, the Għaxaq Carnival maintains its focus on tradition and community involvement, which has been instrumental in its growing reputation and appeal”.
Delving into the history of the Għaxaq Carnival, Mayor Abela revealed that research had uncovered documents indicating its popularity over 150 years ago. This historical significance underscores the carnival’s status as potentially one of the oldest village carnivals in the country, with Abela affirming the community’s commitment to preserving and continuing this cherished tradition for generations to come.
As the curtains draw to a close on another successful Għaxaq Carnival, Mayor Darren Abela and the local community look forward to continuing the legacy of this cultural celebration, ensuring that its vibrant spirit and rich traditions endure for years to come.
