Weekend-long meet the artist open studio event in Valletta
The Trail Valletta is offering art enthusiasts a rare opportunity to meet and converse with local and international fine artists, as well as to witness their artistic processes.
Visitors can expect to feel comfortable in an informal and relaxed space, as artists are busy painting around them. There will also be completed artworks on show, including a range of genres, styles, concepts and techniques, which visitors can photograph, admire, discuss or even purchase.
The Trail Valletta includes nine of the artists featured in the Allura Art online gallery. The artists taking part in the open studio event are Debbie Bonello and Andrew Borg, who will be hosted at Spazju Kreattiv, Andrew Smith at the China Cultural Centre, Jo Dounis at Iniala Harbour House, Natasha Dadush at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Vania Goshe at the German-Maltese Circle, Christine Porter Lofaro at Malta School of Art, Christopher Saliba at Valletta Design Cluster and Mark Schembri at the Undercroft at St Paul’s Cathedral
With this event and the broader Allura Art collection, Allura works to identify the collectible artists of the future, while promoting and sharing the work of these reputable local artists. The featured artists are represented by the Allura Art online gallery, which showcases some of the leading contemporary artists practicing on the Maltese Islands today. It includes both emerging and established fine artists and is updated frequently with new artwork and artists.
The event will be presented by award-winning arts organisation Allura, is free of charge and will be running from 30 October till 31 October, until 7pm on both days. Vaccination certificates are required upon entry, as well as prior registration. Register here.
What’s an open studio?
An open studio is an artist’s workplace that is opened up to the public, so that visitors can meet the artist and take a look behind the scenes. The origins of open studios lie in the 17th century salons of France and the concept has remained a popular one ever since, with open studio events now a regular fixture on cultural calendars all over the world.
The Trail Valletta will in fact be Allura’s second open studio event, the first of which took place as part of the programme for Valletta 2018 Capital of Culture. They are involved in hosting temporary pop-up studios at pubic venues, rather than the artists’ own studios and the cluster effect of numerous studios in a single place, means that visitors can easily cover the area on foot.
