Ostrich Egg Globe by Leonardo is Coming to Malta

An exact replica of a unique 1504 ostrich egg globe made by Leonardo Da Vinci, the earliest surviving globe showing the new world, will be the subject of a lecture by its discoverer Prof. Dr Stefaan Missine.

Leonardo’s globe is a small Italian artifact of 11cm in diameter. It has no support and is composed of two round halves of two ostrich eggs joined to form a sphere and engraved with bluish black ink.

The lecture, organised by the Malta Map Society, will be given at the Casino Maltese, Republic Street, Valletta at 18:30 on Wednesday 24 November.

Dr Stefaan Missinne PhD is a Belgian resident in Austria and a Laureate of the Royal Prince Albert Society. He is an avid and authority on early maps and ancient globes. He is also the author of a study of the silver globe of Kind James II (c.1695)
