Chinese Garden of Serenity to Host Film Festival
This Friday 22 July, the Chinese Cultural Centre in Malta will present the China Documentary Festival, an event celebrating culture both past and present of the world’s most populous country. The festival will take place at the Chinese Garden of Serenity and feature an attendance certificate ceremony in addition to two film presentations
This month sees the inaugural Malta edition of the China Documentary Festival, an international event which began in Beijing earlier this year on 21 June. In addition to the festival’s two varying films, the event also includes a presentation ceremony for students of the Chinese Cultural Centre’s Mandarin course. The Valletta-based centre — a non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture — offers numerous short and long-term language lessons for varying age groups, with this year’s graduates due to be presented with attendance certificates at the film festival.
The event will take place at the Chinese Garden of Serenity in Santa Luċija. This public space was officially opened in 1997, and offers visitors the opportunity to witness first-hand the enduring original aesthetic and profound philosophical design principles governing Chinese garden design. Beginning with the presentation ceremony at 7:30pm, attendees will have opportunity to enjoy the festival programme in the stunning surroundings of one of Malta’s premier outdoor spaces.

The festival’s film schedule starts at 8pm with a screening of Sanxingdui: Rediscovering a Lost Civilisation, a documentary detailing the extraordinary archaeological find of 1986, when construction works accidentally discovered a collection of jade, bone and bronze, in addition to other various items, approximately 25 miles outside of Chengdu. The film explores the far-reaching impacts of this discovery and the efforts to further understand the Bronze Age Sanxingdui civilisation, which thrived approximately 3,500 years ago only to disappear abruptly — and seemingly, mysteriously — circa 1150 BC.
Next, the evening continues with a showing of the animated film Nezha, a 2019 fantasy adventure film featuring China’s well-known mythological character and protection deity. Originally released exclusively IMAX and China Film Giant Screen (CFGS) formats, the film has received positive reviews since its release, and is noted for its high-quality and numerous special effects.
