Next Saturday 19 November, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by their Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan, will perform Rachmaninoff’s dramatic second symphony in an eagerly-awaited concert at Gozo’s Teatru Astra

 Written between 1906 and 1907, this second symphonic installment from the renowned Russian composer marked a breakthrough moment for Rachmaninoff’s reputation as a symphonist, following the disastrous reception of his first symphony at its premiere in 1897.  

Replete with memorable melodies, stunning emotive potency and the lush orchestration Rachmaninoff is known and loved for, this second symphony has established itself as a key work of the genre and one of the composer’s finest contributions. 

The concert also includes Arvo Pärt Cantus in Memoriam by Benjamin Britten and Elgar’s Cello Concerto, Op. 85, and is presented with the support of BOV and The Phoenicia Malta. 

An exclusive Shuttle Service will be provided for patrons at a nominal fee of €2. The service will run from the Mġarr Ferry Terminal following the arrival of the 6:15PM Gozo Channel ferry. The return leg leaves at the end of the concert. Pre-booking is required on events@maltaorchestra.com
