[WATCH] A look into the miniature handmade church in the heart of Mellieħa
Edmund Camilleri’s handmade masterpiece is open to visitors during the days leading up to Easter. Find it at Triq in-Ninfa Calypso in Mellieħa
The faith in Malta is very strong. There is a long-standing tradition of celebrations in this country to honour our Catholic faith. The churches especially in Malta and Gozo are some of the most inspired creations one may ever see in real life. For this local man, Edmund Camilleri, he has created something absolutely extraordinary in his own home. For the past eleven years, Edmund has been creating and constructing the most detailed, exquisite miniature church in his garage. And he’s not the only one to do something so grand! There are a few people on this island who have given years of time to their passion of building a church of their own to share with their family and friends.
With Edmund’s church, it remains in place year-round, yet he opens it up to the public for two weeks of the year leading up to Good Friday and Easter. Tucked in the heart of Mellieħa, you can bring your family to come and witness the most amazing creation by his own hands. Located on the street of Triq in-Ninfa Calypso IL- Mellieħa, you will know it’s the right place by the black draping from the top of the home. This will signal that it is open for you to come and visit.
Even though it’s categorised as a “miniature church”, you can still walk through it as it begins from around the waist up to the ceiling. There are several open themes on each side of the isle that are dedicated to a specific story giving Glory to God and the resurrection. You could honestly sit inside his church for hours and still not be able to find all of the details he has placed inside. The hand painted ceiling, floors and walls show a level of craftsmanship that is unparalleled. As he said “this work never ends”; he will continue to add to it for many years to come. This is his masterpiece, always in progress and always giving Glory to God in the highest. Come on out and visit this beautiful church and see if it doesn’t inspire you to create something of your own!
For this week only, visiting hours are:
