Flights from UK to Malta stopped

Malta, along with a host of other European countries, has opted to stop air travel to and from the UK. This decision has been made in the wake of a new, much more infectious variant of COVID-19. Just a few hours prior, the Health Ministry announced a 14-day quarantine for arrivals from the UK.

The air travel ban from the UK will come into effect as of tomorrow, the 22 of December, at midnight.

As a local of Maltese resident, can you come back to Malta?

Yes. Despite the suspension of flights, Maltese and other residents of the island who are currently in the UK, will indeed be allowed to return to Malta. That being said, they must take a PCR swab test when they arrive and go into a 14-day quarantine, even if they test negative.

The Health Ministry said that this was a temporary decision, as discussions with other EU member states is ongoing.

Last weekend, it was found that a growing number of European countries barred travel from the UK, in a bid to block a new strain of COVID-19, which is sweeping across southern England. The emergence of this particular variant has worried scientists, as it is understood to be more infectious. France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland and Bulgaria have all announced restrictions on UK travel.
