98% of local population received at least one dose of COVID vaccine

According to the health minister Chris Fearne, a total of 98% of those aged 12 and over have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

In addition to this news, Fearne told commissioner for health and food safety Stella Kyriakides that three-quarters of the population is now completely vaccinated against the virus. The commissioner is in Malta for one day has already visited a vaccination centre and the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre in Msida.

“As you’ve pointed out before, the vaccine is our main tool to help us fight the pandemic,” said Fearne, adding that despite the dark cloud that the pandemic has brought over Europe, the bloc’s success story remains how it managed to get ahold of vaccines and make them available to its citizens in just a year.

In Malta, the government will be able to start lifting restrictions due to the huge turnout for the vaccine. “However, we are not safe until we are all safe. There are other regions in the world that lack when it comes to vaccination. As a leader in health issues, Europe needs to ensure that accessibility to vaccines is not limited to European citizens,” he said.

In the meantime, Kyriakides commended Malta for its “excellent programme”, and that Malta was a “key player in looking ahead.”
