what have been the commission's major achievements so far?

Malta is not a newcomer within the film industry as for nearly a century, the island has attracted high-profile film productions. We have raised the Titanic, been the battleground for the soldiers of Troy, the Romans of Gladiator and The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

We have also welcomed a diverse class of characters, including emperors, assassins, lovers, pirates and everyone in between. Together with the ex-Minister for Tourism at the time, Konrad Mizzi, we developed a national strategy for the film sector. Since January 2019, the Government of Malta has raised the cash rebate for film and TV productions to 40%, placing us at the forefront, together with the rest of Europe, Canada and Australia.

For the first time in 40 years, the Government of Malta is investing heavily in the infrastructure of the Malta Film Studios, with the aim of making Malta a world class film industry.

what is being done to make malta more visible to filmmakers?

We have a strong outreach programme, including being present at key film markets, meeting producers and visiting the prominent studios. We also provided assistance in terms of location scouting for all productions interested in our islands. All of this is backed by a strong consolidated marketing campaign within our target market.
