Emily A. Francis sits down with architect and owner Aaron Abela, the visionary behind Mulberries in Żabbar, a project he quite literally built stone by stone. In this intimate conversation, Aaron reflects on the moment inspiration struck, the challenges of restoring a dilapidated rural property, and how a lifelong passion for vernacular architecture evolved into a one-of-a-kind boutique retreat with a deeply personal story at its core.

Malta’s architectural landscape is at a critical juncture. Development pressure continues to reshape the islands at speed, yet a new generation of architects is challenging the narrative; shifting the focus from volume to value, from speculation to performance. In this issue, architect Joe Galea reflects on a practice rooted in data, material logic and environmental responsibility, positioning Malta not as a constraint, but as a testing ground.

Featured on our cover, the award-winning House for a Young Family captures this shift with clarity. Developed through parametric modelling and solar analysis, the project transforms planning constraints into opportunity; elevating the courtyard to enhance stack ventilation, improving natural light, and integrating energy collection seamlessly into the architecture. It is a quiet but confident example of how performance-led thinking can shape domestic space in Malta.

“Malta stands at a crossroads,” Galea observes. “The next evolution of Maltese architecture must move beyond speed and speculation, and toward performance, contextual sensitivity, and long-term value.” His approach; shaped by early exposure to fabrication and advanced research in computational design; demonstrates how digital tools can elevate local architecture while remaining deeply rooted in context.

This forward-looking ethos resonates across the issue. In Beyond the Bastions, currently on view at MICAS, Konrad Buhagiar and Dr Georgina Portelli examine the transformation of the historic Ospizio site into Malta’s contemporary art museum, framing architecture as an evolving cultural proposition. Meanwhile, Jonathan Mizzi of Mizzi Studio reimagines Malta’s busiest junction as a regenerative mobility hub where infrastructure, ecology and long-term thinking converge.

Together, these perspectives suggest a maturing architectural culture; one increasingly defined not by scale, but by intention.

We explore the Chinese Garden of Serenity in Santa Luċija, Malta, a peaceful escape built in 1997 as a gift from China. More than just a garden, this is a place of meaning and reflection. Chinese gardens are designed to mirror life itself, following three principles: harmony with nature, a world complete in thought, and surprise at every turn. Here, rocks stand as the body of the world, while water flows as its spirit, together symbolising yin and yang, balance and serenity. With winding paths, gateways, ponds, and quiet corners, the garden invites visitors to slow down and simply breathe.
