Festivals cancelled, clubs closed temporarily

The four large-scale festivals, planned for the months of August and September have all been cancelled. These include the BPM Festival, Escape 2 The Island, Rhythm + Waves and Mi Casa, all of which were being promoted via social media for weeks.

The events will not go ahead following an agreement between the organisers, Entertainment Concepts Limited, the Maltese government and the Tourism Authority, amid COVID-19 concerns. The cancellations came just a few hours after the government’s announcement of new measures, which include venues drastically reducing the number of attendees of events, as a minimum of 4 square metres is required between each person.

Hand in hand with the festival cancellations, came the closure of four venues, catering to mass events, two of which are located in Paceville in St Julians.

The four venues were forced to shut down after health authorities traced a person who had tested positive for Coronavirus to all four establishments. The venues were ordered to carry out a full sanitation exercise, as well as provide detailed certification from the company carrying it out.

At the time of writing this article, there are 199 active cases on the island, following a surge in cases last week.
