Açaí lovers: this one’s for you

Located in the heart of St Julians is Oakberry Açaí Bowls, a Brazilian born brand that is adored by many in over 10 countries across the globe.

Despite having opened its doors just two months ago in August, Oakberry has already made a name for itself as one of the top spots to get your açaí fix on the island.

Let’s get right to the good stuff.

Oakberry’s açaí bowls and smoothies can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner, as well as for a cheeky little snack. They are also perfect pre or post work-out snacks so there really is no wrong time to pay them a visit.

The menu offers açaí enthusiasts the option between bowls or smoothies, both of which are generous, fresher than fresh and equally delicious. It really all depends on how you’re feeling that day.

It doesn’t stop there, however. After choosing your preferred size, you can choose your toppings, ranging from seasonal fruits to chia seeds to coconut flakes, muesli and crushed almonds. If you opt for the smoothie, you can choose up to three toppings.

For the more adventurous (or the more ravenous) of eaters, there’s also the unlimited toppings option if you opt for a bowl. That’s right – U-N-L-I-M-I-T-E-D.

For the more health-conscious out there, or those who suffer with food intolerances or allergies, açaí itself is gluten, lactose and trans-fat free, as well as organic and vegan!

What’s all the fuss about açaí anyway, we hear you mumble?

You’ve probably seen many an #acai hashtag and just as many smoothie bowl photos on your Instagram feed. Well, there’s a reason for that. In a nutshell, açaí is one of the most delicious members of the super food squad.

Açaí are found on açaí palm trees in South American rainforests. The seed of the fruit takes up about 80% of the berry but the flesh and skin pack plenty of vitamins, as well as other super nutrients (not to mention that the berries are around 70 calories per cup).

In truth, the health benefits of these little berries are second to none. They’re packed to the brim, with antioxidants, fiber, heart-healthy fats, such as Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9, calcium, potassium and other vitamins.

In the words of Oakberry Malta developer Arthur Oyama, the company is looking to “create açaí culture here in Malta just as it is in Brazil, where it’s connected to a healthy lifestyle and sport. It’s very common for friends or even the whole family to go for an açaí bowl together.”

The company have an impressive presence in more than 10 countries including Portugal, Spain, the USA, Qatar, Australia and China and show zero signs of stopping.

What’s more, just last year, Oakberry was present in the SuperBowl in the USA, the Tennis ATP Grand Slams and even the F1 circuits.
