Marsa stadium set to be converted into world-class venue

Athletics Malta have launched a huge infrastructural investment project at the Matthew Micallef St John Athletics Stadium in Marsa.

The aim is for the stadium to be transformed into a world-class venue for local athletes whilst at the same time supporting the association’s drive in transforming the area into an international sporting hub, with the advent of the Games of Small States of Europe in 2023. Malta will be hosting the Games in 2023. They are a biennial multi-sports event that feature nine summer Olympic sports and nine members.

The venue will be fully equipped with rehabilitation centres, lecture rooms and a dedicated hostel to facilitate international competitions.

The investment was announced by Athletics Malta president Andy Grech, in the presence of Clifton Grima, the Parliamentary Secretary for Sport. There were also officials from the Maltese Olympic Committee and Sport Malta.

“Modern stadiums require investment and to make the stadium worthwhile, our architects have designed it to be useful the whole year round and resource efficient,” said Andy Grech.

“Our warmup area and grandstand will be covered with photovoltaic panels, which absorb sunlight and provide shelter to our spectators and athletes. Rainwater collection and reusable water storage will be used for our rehabilitation area, showers and toilets as well as the irrigation of our infield area,” he continued.
