Springing into style with charles and ron's latest collection

"Dawra Misterjuża" Spring/Summer 2021

It’s time to spring into action, as Charles and Ron welcomes the change of season with a new collection

Spring is officially less than a month away, and while we may still be wrapped up in multiple layers right now there’s nothing like mentally transporting ourselves to warmer, sunny days just around the corner.

Charles and Ron’s recently launched pieces are all kinds of glorious, inspired by the work of Mary Meilak, in particular her 1947 poem called ‘Dawra Misterjuża’ (A Mysterious Journey), which is the perfect example of her fantastical view of the world around her.

Charles and Ron’s new spring/summer 2021 collection has been the perfect vehicle to showcase this.

Who is Mary Meilak?

Meilak holds a unique place in the history of Maltese literature in that she is the first recorded female Maltese poet as well as the first Maltese woman to publish a book of collected poetry.

She was born in 1905 in Victoria Gozo and started writing poetry at the age of 25. At a time when the female voice was not the most heard in the country, Meilak was pretty much the only feminine voice in Maltese romantic poetry.

Meilak’s vision has inspired a collection that features prints of close ups of Malta’s unique characteristics, designed by Charles & Ron’s team, featuring the Triton Fountain, jellyfish, unicorn statues found on Valletta facades, Maltese lace and filigree details from a unique piece that belongs to the Palazzo Falson collection, all mixed with excerpts from Meilak’s poetry.

The collection has a very colourful palette to further enhance the fantasy themed designs. It consists of Lime Green, Turquoise Sea, Purple Sky, Pink, Lilac, Red Orange , Blue, Peach Cream and Filigree Silver all set off against staple White and some Black accents.

The SS/21 designs are paired with a selection of new bag designs, which are hand-made in Malta, in fine Italian leather. New glitter effect leather is introduced and combined with graphic print on the new bag designs.
