Maltese weightlifter smashes five national records
The intensely talented teenage weightlifter Tenishia Thornton has broken no less than five national records, as she placed first in the B category of the 49kg weight class, at the European Championships in Russia.
Tenishia is 15-years-old and has been raising for bar for the sport continuously, ever since she put on a whopping 159kg total performance, a 4kg improvement from her Youth World Championships performance last year. In this competition, she placed third.
The athlete lifted 89kg in the clean and jerk and 70kg in the snatch, smashing five national records with not only her clean and jerk, but her overall totals too. Thornton beat Greek weightlifter Maria Pipiliaridou and Moldovan Hincu Teodora-Luminita, who has combined scores of 157kg and 155kg respectively.
In case that wasn’t enough, Tenishia also broke the Commonwealth Youth Record for snatches and totals. The athlete is currently taking part in the European Championships in Moscow, Russia and Yasmin Zammit Stevens will be competing this Wednesday at 7:30am in the 71kg category.
