Maltese and Gozitan beaches get the Blue Flag

11 beaches on the Maltese islands have been awarded the Blue Flag ecolabel by the Foundation for Environment Education (FEE) international Blue Flag jury in Copenhagen.
The Jury took into consideration the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions on many of the Blue Flag beaches across the world last year. In some countries, the flag granted dispensation cases, aligned with the non-compliances due to the pandemic.
What is the Blue Flag?
In a nutshell, the Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches, harbours, marinas and boats, which participate in the Blue Flag programme and have been proven to be clean, safe and respectful of the environment.
The foundation works towards sustainable development at beaches and marinas, through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, safety, environmental management and other services. It’s one of the five programmes run by the independent non-profit international organisation, the FEE.
The Maltese islands followed these restrictions in a good manner, keeping in mind the safety of the beach users in mind and this was to be commended, according to the jury. So, that’s a big WELL DONE.
The following beaches received the Blue Flag:
Blue Flag international congratulated Malta and urged it to consider marinas for this award, similar to other EU countries, showing a commitment to clean seas. In Malta, as of yet, no marinas have achieved Blue Flag status.
The Blue Flag season for Malta kick starts on 15 June 2021 and ends on 15 September 2021.
