Two national records beaten at European Championships in Hungary

Maltese swimmers Mya Azzopardi and Thomas Wareing have both smashed national records at the European Aquatics Championships in Hungary and we couldn’t be more proud!

Mya improved her own national record during her 200-metre freestyle, as she clocked a 2:04.52, by comparison to her previous record of 2:05.11, which she achieved in Turkey last April.

Thomas, on the other hand, improved on the previous record initially set by Michael Umnov back in April 2018, of 2:08.68. Thomas clocked a time of 2:08.34 in the 200-metre individual medley during the championships.

Athletes are currently prepping for a spot in the Olympic Games this summer, which means that the record-breaking performances could not have happened at a better time for Mya and Thomas. In fact, the European Aquatic Championships is an approved Olympic Qualifying event, which means that their performances are all the more crucial here.

Three others talented swimmers also form part of the Maltese contingent currently competing and these include Dylan Cachia, Nicola Muscat and Sasha Gatt, accompanied by National swimming coach Artem Goncharenko, physiotherapist Andrew Pisani and coaches Gail Rizzo and Catalin Stan.

Our Maltese team will be competing for the rest of this week and are scheduled to return on 24 May.
