MUŻA visitors in for a treat this public holiday

MUŻA, the National Community Art Museum is currently closed on Tuesdays. However, next Tuesday, the 29 of June, which is the Mnarja public holiday, will be a one-time exception.

Next Tuesday, not only will the museum be open, but visitors are also in for a treat of extraordinary attractions, as well as a special offer. MUŻA visitors will be able to tour the National Museum of Archeology for free on the same day! Just like MUŻA, this museum, which is in Valletta, is currently closed on Tuesdays.

Up until next October, a stop at MUŻA will not be complete without a visit to Masterpieces at MUŻA, an exhibition displaying 13 Old Master paintings in the Camerone at ground floor level. The remarkable artwork, which range from the late 15th to the mid-18th centuries, were loaned to MUŻA from an international private collection.

Highlighting the day that the country celebrates Mnarja, visitors should definitely not miss the opportunity to view the painting entitled Boschetto Fair, by Edward Caruana Dingli. It is one of the most important folklore-inspired works by the artist (1876-1950). Executed with the impressionist technique that the artist was practicing at the time, this painting demonstrates quick brushstrokes that are used to capture the atmosphere of a specific place and time of day.

The artist opted for a particular composition for this work, especially when compared to other painting that were produced during the same time period.

The National Museum of Archeology, on the other hand, offers a spectacular range of artefacts dating back to the Neolithic Period, some 5000 years before Christ. A special attraction at the museum right now is the exhibition Alien Headaches? The Hypogeum Skulls Enigma. This is a display of the skulls discovered at the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, which have always generated great interest, largely due to the fact that Sir Temi Zammit described them as being “of the long-headed type”, during excavations at the Hypogeum in the first decade of the 20th century.

Besides MUŻA and the National Museum of Archeology, other Heritage Malta sites that will be open on 29 June are:

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, the Tarxien Temples, Għar Dalam and Borġ in-Nadur, the Inquisitor’s Palace, the Domvs Romana, the National Museum of Natural History, the Citadel museums and sites, Ta’ Kola Windmill and the Ġgantija Temples.

The Hypogeum is open from 9am till 5pm, while all the other mentioned sites and museums will be welcoming visitors between 10am and 4:30pm.
