Malta climbs up the ranks in FIFA football rankings

We’re beaming from ear to ear! Malta has climbed no less than six places to 171st place in the FIFA football rankings, according to the world national team score board.

Led by coach Devis Mangia, Malta’s latest run in the World Cup has qualifiers has been impressive and just this month, the country registered a home win over Cyprus (3-1), two defeats against Slovenia (0-1) and Russia (0-2), with the team displaying some high quality football.

The new rankings follow 152 FIFA World Cup qualifying games and 25 friendlies across the globe. Malta sits fifth in Group H of the World Cup 2022 European Qualifiers with four points and the only country that registered more progress than Malta is Libya, which climbed 12 places to 110.

Belgium holds the top spot, followed by Brazil. Euro 2020 finalists England are ranked third best in the world, having swapped positons with France. Euro 2020 winners, Italy, on the other hand, sit in at 5th place.

During the next international break, Malta will be playing against Slovenia at the stadium in Ta’ Qali, on the 8th of October at 8:45pm. Following that, Malta will be playing against Cyprus away on 11th October at 6pm.
