Bridge in Brisbane lights up with Maltese colours

Story Bridge, which is located in Brisbane Australia, donned the Maltese colours red and white on Tuesday, to commemorate Malta’s Independence Day celebrations. The spectacle celebrates Maltese expatriates living in Australia, many of whom live in Brisbane, as well as many other places such as the Sunshine and Golden Coast.

Sandra Alexandra Micallef uploaded photos of the lights on Facebook, and thanked the Brisbane City Council for lighting up the bridge to raise awareness about the Maltese national holiday.

What is Story Bridge?

The Story Bridge is a heritage-listed steel cantilever bridge, which spans across the Brisbane river and allows pedestrians and vehicles to cross between the northern and southern suburbs of Brisbane. It is, in fact, the longest cantilever bridge in the whole of Australia.

Story Bridge carries almost 100,000 vehicles per day and has been up and running since July 1940, with construction having begun five years earlier, in May 1935.
