Malta makes history at the European Small Nations Championships in San Marino

Malta’s super weightlifting team won gold at the European Small Nations Championships in San Marino.

The 42nd European Small Nations Tournament was organised successfully in San Marino on the 16 October 2021, where team Malta won gold, the current team’s first-ever team gold at the European Small Nation Championships.

The Malta Weightlifting team was made up of female lifters Roberta Tabone and Olympian Yazmin Zammit Steven as well as male lifters Anton Micallef, Shaun CIantar and Vlad Baldacchino.

Malta beat Cyrus and Iceland, who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively, with a total of 1365 points. Cyprus garnered a total of 1333 points whilst Iceland a total of 1239.

Monaco finished in fourth place with San Marino fifth and Luxembourg sixth.

Malta won gold overall for the mixed team for the first time 19 years ago at the 24th edition of the European Small Nations Championships in Germany.
