Fast ferry free for Gozitan students and teachers

Almost 1,500 Gozitan students and teachers will be able to use the fast ferry service for exactly €0, announced education minister Justyne Caruana yesterday.

Whilst addressing a press conference on the measures introduced by the 2022 Budget, the minister said that the EDU Fast Ferry Scheme will be allowing students and educators who need to travel to their sister island of Malta for free. The scheme will see students at Ġ. F. Abela Junior College in Msida, the University of Malta in Msida and The Malta College of Arts, Science & Technology (MCAST) in Paola and Mosta, as well as teachers working in Malta reimbursed when using the service.

The minister is herself Gozitan and said that whoever is eligible must apply online on the ministry’s website and fast, too, as the applications close on 3 November, 2021.

How would the scheme work?

According to Justyne Caruana, the fast ferry operators, Gozo Fast Ferry and Virtu Ferries, will be issuing an EDU Fast Ferry Card, which must be used by travellers when they’re using the services. Reimbursements will be given for every single journey made via fast ferry, on tuition days during the school year. Payments, which are capped at €250 per scholastic year, will be made in arrear on a quarterly basis.

The student organisations Gozo University Group (GUG) welcomed the introduction of the card and said that incentives such as these will encourage more students and teachers to make use of the service and make their lives easier.

Are you eligible? Apply here before the 3 of November!
