Gozo goes green with first fully electric buses

Gozo is going green as it has finally started using its first 100% electric buses, as a shuttle service that will transport people to Mġarr, the harbour town located in south-eastern Gozo.

The service, which is free of charge, will operate between the harbour and the Xewkija heliport between 5am and 9am. Trips will occur every 10 minutes, between 5am and 8am and then, between 3pm and 6pm. At other times, trips will take place every half hour.

Those looking to use the electric buses can park their vehicles near the heliport at Triq il-Kanal and triq il-Bwier and cartch the bus to the harbour, where they can then either catch the Gozo Ferry to Ċirkewwa, or the fast ferry to the capital of Valletta.

According to Grupp Universitarji Għawdxin, students are likely to use and appreciate the service the most, as they spend a lot of time worrying about where to park their cars in Mġarr.

Clint Camilleri, the Gozo minister, added: “These electric buses targeted at Gozitan workers and students who travel to Malta to work or study, as well as everyone who wants to travel to Malta without a car.” “We are improving connectivity between the two islands,” he said.

The Maltese government has repeatedly called for the island of Gozo to become a pioneer for low-carbon policies, with the aim being for it to transform into fully carbon-neutral, before the national EU 2050 target.

Can we get there?
