Malta listed as number one island to retire on

A brand new report from InternationalLiving.com has released a list of 15 picturesque, great value islands around the world, all of which offer people the opportunity to enjoy island-living with lifestyle perks that range from diving to sailing to meals out.

Their hand-picked list of islands, which are scattered across the world, start with our very own island of Malta.

At just 122 square miles, “The tiny island of Malta has something for everyone – from ancient walled cities and breath-taking coastal trails to countryside farmhouses and charming restaurants,” says the article.

The article goes on to add that the country is home to a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which include Valletta, the Ġgantija Temples, Ħaġar Qim, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and Mnajdra, as well as a number of sites on the tentative list.

“For centuries, Malta has been a sought-after destination and Valletta, Malta’s capital city and the European Capital of Culture 2018, is an especially desirable location with rolling hills reminiscent of San Francisco,” says the article.

On the island’s side is also the fact that we have an English-speaking population, as a result of being colonised by the British for over 150 years, makes it easy for new arrivals to fit in.

The final point that the article mentions is how far the dollar can take you. According to the author, “surprisingly far, with couples living comfortably on $2,600 per month.”

Malta stands proudly on the list, alongside other contenders such as Mallorca in Spain, Penang in Malaysia, Roatán in Honduras and Crete in Greece.
