Donate to L-Istrina by taking the bus

It’s confirmed! The 5th edition of the Tallinja għall-Istrina initiative will be taking place tomorrow, on the 18 of December, announced President George Vella this week.

By means of this initiative, Malta Public Transport will be donating the fare for every single journey paid with a Tallinja card, as well as those paid for in cash on the bus. Just to clarify: if you travel by bus tomorrow, you will be helping to raise funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF).

“We are proud to be supporting the Maltese community and the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. At Malta Public Transport, we believe that we can make a difference in the quality of people’s lives as we care about the community and our environment,” said Malta Public Transport chairman, Felipe Cosmen.

What is L-Istrina?

Starting from the definition, the Maltese word strina is derived from the Italian word strenna, meaning a gift, usually given in Italy during Christmastime. The L-Istrina the locals know and love is an annual telethon event, which takes place every year on Boxing Day and has been since 1995, in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The 12-hour telethon is broadcast across all Maltese TV stations, as well as online, allowing viewers to call in or send text messages, with the amount they would like to donate.

Last year’s edition raised more than €6.5 million!

What is the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation?

The aim of the MCCFF is to improve the quality of life and care of individuals and society in general. They enhance the support and contribution from sources and sectors, to social justice democracy and sustainable development. They also enable solidarity and social enterprise, advance the education and dignity of the underprivileged children, primarily those who are or have been in care systems and they promote the international collaboration in research and aid in conformity.

In a nutshell, the Foundation supports people and entities to improve their health, quality of life and wellbeing of people, during their time of need.

Will you be tuning in this Boxing Day?
