Winners of the Euromed Regatta announced

Hosted in Mellieħa Bay by the Malta Young Sailors Club and held under the auspices of the Malta Sailing Federation, the 21st edition of the Mapfre Euromed International Regatta once again welcomed a strong international fleet.

Timmy Vassallo was in second place all the way up until Tuesday, and had the same number of points as Jonas Micallef. He beat Micallef with a single point, winning the Senior Category. Tim Lubat, the Spanish sailor who is ranked 4th internationally placed third.

The weather conditions on Tuesday were the most calm out of the four days spanning the event, with around seven knots of wind and calm waters.

In the Beginners’ Class, Michael Cremona was first place, after having lost his place but for a short stint to Jacob Carl Delia, who ended up in third place. Timothy De Cesare, on the other hand, made it back to second place, just three points behind Cremona and three ahead of Delia.

With regards to Class 4, Shaun Aquilina was beaten by Benjamin Vassallo by just two points on the last day, despite two consistent days of racing. The third place spot was taken by Canadian Carlo Charabati, who ended 14 points behind Aquilina.

The one to watch was Jean Paul Zahra, racing in Class 6m. He won the final three races, beating Matthew Flores and ending in first place. For the days prior to the end of the race, Flores was holding on to first place and yet, had to settle for second in the last leg. In third place, Dimitris Vertsonis.

“Malta Young Sailors Club is very satisfied with the outcome of this year’s Mapfre Euromed International Regatta. It was rewarding to welcome back international sailors, some of which are highly ranked in the world,” said Christian Bajada, Commodore of the Malta Young Sailor’s Club. “Of course, having Maltese sailors performing so well fills us with great pride. There is certainly a bright future for our youngsters,” she added.
