18-hour Christmas run for charity

18-hour Christmas run for charity

Stephen Sammut Nurminen

Tonight, or should we say tomorrow morning, Maltese athlete Stephen Sammut Nurminen will be undertaking his greatest challenge yet: to run a total of 18 hours around the University sports track in Msida. Why? In aid of Valletta’s Soup Kitchen.

Let us explain...

For every 10 minutes the athlete runs, one whole meal will be donated to Soup Kitchen OFM in Valletta, which is run by Franciscan Friars, by meal preparation company called Fortify Meals. After some quick mental maths, we can confirm that this translates to 108 meals donated to the homeless and less fortunate this season.

The Soup Kitchen receives a total of 70 to 90 meal requests per day and it costs around €4,000 per week to feed all the homeless. Therefore, when Father Marcellino Micallef, Soup Kitchen OFM runner, approached him to raise awareness about homelessness, the 35-year-old athlete knew exactly what he needed to do.

Stephen plans to run from midnight on Christmas Eve until 6pm. He’ll be running for four hours straight and be taking 15-30 minute breaks in between. This is not the first time that the impressive athlete has set himself up for such a challenge. Last July, Stephen ran the length of Malta three times, a total of 110km in 12 hours, in support of the Richmond Foundation.
