Valletta NYE show cancelled

In light of the rising COVID-19 cases and the measures recently announced by the health authorities, the New Year’s Eve show, which was set to take place in Palace Square in Valletta, has been cancelled.

According to the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA), the planned programme will instead be presented on television and carried the following stations: TVM, ONE and NET TV.

“A television production will now replace the New Year’s Eve event, which will not be televised from Fort St Elmo and will follow all the relevant protocols,” a statement read.

Why was it cancelled?

As you may have heard or read, health minister Chris Fearne announced that all standing events will be banned as of Monday, 27 December, with the only exception being weddings and funerals.

The VCA was hoping that the show could go on, observing protocols currently in force, but COVID numbers soared in recent days as the Omicron variant was detected in Malta.

Last year, the celebrations were also cancelled.
