Immersive installation tackles immigration in Mediterranean

Artist Katel Delia is presenting an immersive installation called The Last Breath, built specifically for Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq gallery in Mqabba, in the southern region of the country.

The subject of The Last Breath is migration within the Mediterranean region. With the use of media, including light, sound and visuals, the artist aims to transport viewers to a different place, where the experience will be a homage to many migrants who lose their lives while searching for a better one. The installation offers several levels of interpretation and legibility, from the idyllic to the shocking reality of things.

Katel Delia herself is part of a family who had to migrate several times, to different countries throughout the years and is compassionate towards those who have no choice but to leave everything behind. Therefore, she has a special interest in migration.

The exhibition, which was curated by Art Sweven, was partly inspired by a map that the artist came across from NGO Migreurop, which shows the number of people who disappeared or passed away in the Mediterranean region.

Check out the exhibition at Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq in Mqabba, which is running until the 16 of January. Opening hours are Monday to Saturdays, from 6am to noon and on Sundays from 7am to noon. Check out the updates here.
