Traditional Maltese balconies double as shelters for cats

The local council of Marsa have come up with a brand new initiative, to create more shelter spaces for stray cats around the town and it’s one of the best things we have seen in a while!

Mayor Josef Azzopardi presented the town’s new cat shelters, which are in the form of traditional colourful Maltese balconies. Funds received by the local council were used to spearhead the project and build the cat shelters from scratch, as well as to buy some cat food, too.

According to the mayor, the idea to build the shelters was an original and unique one, which came to be as they wanted the shelters to, in some way, relate to the Maltese culture.

The adorable shelters contain bowls of cat food and can fit up to six cats in each one. They were constructed out of marine plywood, in order to provide the felines with well-needed warmth and shelter throughout the cold winter months.

“It’s a dream that came to reality. We kept the Maltese traditions in mind and created original cat shelters. We drew it and today we got the result,” said Josef Azzopardi.
