An Original Musical Dedicated to the Great Italian Painter Caravaggio

The Mediterranean Conference Centre’s first in-house production will be featuring the great Italian chiaroscuro artist Michelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio. Born in a Lombard town in Italy, Caravaggio was a prolific painter, creating one of the most cherished and studied paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries. His innovations and modern outlook on past cardinal events further inspired baroque paintings.

Caravaggio fled Rome to avoid justice after he was indicted for the murder of Tomassoni, arriving in Malta in 1607. His freedom in Malta was short-lived, as he was imprisoned in Fort St. Angelo in 1608. He made a lucky escape to Sicily, where he, unfortunately, passed away two years later, at the age of 38.

Nowadays, one of his most renowned paintings, ‘The Beheading of St John the Baptist’, hangs at the Oratory in St john’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.

The recently produced musical will be directed by Malcolm Galea, composed by Paul Abela, and lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia. The musical’s creative team is aiming high, hoping to take production overseas. Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo has discussed these endeavours in a press conference, stating that this level of production will be celebrated through generations to come.
