By defeating San Marino by two goals to nil at Serravalle, Malta earned their first three points in the 2022-2023 UEFA Nations League campaign.
The game picked up after the beginning of the second half when the VAR overturned a penalty, and Jan Busuttil scored his first goal for the national team minutes later. Matthew Guillaumier’s well-placed header put the game out of reach for the hosts at Stadio San Marino.
Coach Devis Mangia had to devise his team without Teddy Teuma and Ryan Camenzuli, who were both suspended and chose to start with roughly the same eleven players as against Kuwait in March, with Brandon Paiber replacing Teuma in midfield.
