Kinemastik International Short Film Festival Returns this Week

Film screen at Kinemastik International Short Film Festival

This week, starting Friday 29 July, the Kinemastik International Short Film Festival will return to Floriana for a three-day celebration of excellence in filmmaking

This Friday sees the welcome return of the Kinemastik International Short Film Festival, an eagerly-anticipated event featuring a selection of independent short films, as well as various music performances. In addition, the third day (Sunday 31 July) of the event will present the Little Rock People 11th Children’s Short Film Festival, an occasion presenting a number of shorts specifically curated for younger audiences.

On the Friday and Saturday evenings, in addition to the main film schedule, the festival features a series of local DJs and live musicians who will offer performances both before and after the film presentations. On Saturday at 7pm, Kinemastik welcomes Maltese electronic artist JOON, with later performances by Les Nuits Cosmiques, Dean Weangrow, Nigel Baldacchino and Campbell Reid following the evening’s film programme.

The weekend is an annual event organised by Kinemastik, an NGO which works to promote local filmmakers as well as offering masterclasses and workshops with industry professionals throughout the year. The event is well-known in Malta for the high quality and original nature of works presented, and for its unique place in Malta’s thriving arts scene.

Msida Bastion Historic Garden

The festival will take place at Floriana’s Msida Bastion Historic Garden, a former 19th century Protestant cemetery which, following a period of restoration in the late 1980s and 1990s, is now considered a cultural landmark in Malta. The festival has been hosted here for a number of years, with attendees able to enjoy engaging short films in stunning historic surroundings, and is an event supported by Arts Council Malta through the Investment in Cultural Organisations Fund.

The Kinemastik International Short Film Festival will take place 29 – 31 July. To learn more, visit the event page on Facebook.
