Ħamrun Spartans make history as first team to reach UEFA play-offs

Ħamrun Spartans make history as the first Maltese team to reach UEFA play-offs.

The team made a strong comeback after their 0-1 defeat in Ta’ Qali last Sunday, beating Levski Sofia in Bulgaria last night during nail-biting penalties.

Ryan Camenzuli put Hamrun ahead 1-2  within 60 seconds from Levski’s equaliser, to send the game into extra time, during which no goals were scored.

Goalkeeper Henry Bonello was the star of the show, after saving two penalties and securing the historic qualification to the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League.

Ħamrun will face Partizan Belgrade during play-offs in Serbia on Thursday 18 August and in Malta on Thursday 25 August.

Ħamrun Spartans Football Club has an illustrious history going back more than 100 years. This history is dotted with trophies along the way, including eight national league titles. The first Championship goes back to 1913-14, with the club winning its eight title in 2020-21.

Hibernians and Gżira both bow out of the UEFA Conference League.
