Birkirkara women’s team secure Malta’s first ever victory in the UEFA Women’s Champions league

Coached by Jose Borg, Birkirkara have secured a 2-1 win against Northern Ireland champions Glentoran, making them Malta’s first representative to secure a win in the UEFA women’s Champions League.

Players Raina Giusti and Charlene Zammit scored the winnings goals in the second half and beat Glentoran in their final qualifying game from Group 7.

For this particular game, Coach Borg used the same starting formation he had used against SFK Sarajevo. Glentoran forged ahead during the 13th minute, putting Birkirkara behind, but in the second half, Coach Borg substituted player Sofie Landerosa with Giusti and together with Zammit, left the team victorious.

This is Giusti’s third goal in this competition as she becomes the all-time Maltese scorer in the champions league.

Birkirkara, who won their 10th Maltese title last season, have now recorded their second positive result internationally.  Apart from this victory, they drew 2-2 against Wales’ Cardiff Met ladies in the 2018/2019 season under the guidance of coach Melania Bajada.
