Highest Point in Turkey Reached by Maltese Climbers

Three climbers from Malta reached the top of Mount Kackar at 3,931 metres and the 5,137-meter Mount Ararat in Turkey.

Giovanni Camilleri, 62, the founder of the Trail Makers Trekking Group and an avid climber, was a part of the first Maltese team to swiftly and successfully conquer the highest peak in Turkey. For the last two months, Camilleri and the other Maltese climbers trained consistently to ascend Mount Kackar and Mount Ararat, a dormant volcano and the highest mountain in Turkey at a dizzying height of 5,137 metres.

slopes in addition to climbing up and down the stairs to Għajn Tuffieħa Bay as part of their training for this expedition.

On August 18, 2022, Giovanni and Martin Fiorentino became the first people to reach the peak of Mount Kackar after a 7-hour ascent via unstable. It took four days to accomplish the ascent.

On August 22, 2022, they started their ascent and spent the nights resting in their tents. On August 25, 2022, at 6.15 am, the Maltese team, one of the quickest teams to summit this peak, arrived at the top. This mountain’s summit push is not for the weak of heart.

Giovanni has taken part in Maltese expeditions that have climbed mountains in almost every continent, including the Russian Elbrus, the American Denali, the Andean Aconcagua, and the African Kilimanjaro. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing what they attempt to climb next!
