Malta to Face Azerbaijan in Women’s World Cup Qualification Match

The last two games of Malta’s qualifying campaign for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup are set to take place in the next couple of weeks. The last doubleheader of the current season for the Maltese team begins on Friday, September 2 at home against Azerbaijan at Centenary Stadium. It will kick off at 19:30. The following week, on Tuesday, September 6, Malta will then meet Montenegro in Podgorica. It will kick off at 18:00.

Mark Gatt’s team will be playing for the first time since April when they hosted Denmark in a qualifying match before taking on the Italy U-23 team in a friendly. With a 2-2 tie against Bosnia-Herzegovina at Centenary Stadium and a 2-1 victory over their upcoming opponents, Azerbaijan, in Baku, Malta currently has a total of four points.

Coach Gatt has chosen 22 players for these two games, including five members of the Birkirkara team who prevailed in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The defence of Stephania Farrugia, Ann-Marie Said, Charlene Zammit, and versatile player Alishia Sultana all contributed to the team’s historic triumph over Glentoran of Northern Ireland. The victory by Birkirkara marked the first triumph in 38 attempts by a Maltese team in the Champions League. Along with five other Swieqi United teammates—Jessica Dimech, Jade Flask, Jade Schembri, Shona Zammit, and Emma Xuereb—Gatt also chose Dorianne Theuma, who was voted the 2021–2022 MFA Best Player of the Women’s League.

Tickets prices to watch Malta vs Azerbaijan are listed accordingly:
