Policies prohibiting homosexual males from donating blood were greatly affected by the AIDS pandemic of the 1980s. Health authorities saw male sexual activity as having a significant danger, and blood donation laws have been slow to change despite advances in science and blood testing methods.

Gay rights groups contended that the prohibition on homosexual males was discriminatory and that health authorities should concentrate on dangerous behaviour, regardless of who the potential donor is, rather than sexual orientation. Deputy Minister Chris Fearne has announced this monumental shift this morning, pledging to strive for equality.

MGRM have shared their response on this historic law reform.
