This weekend, from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 October, Birgu Fest returns for a celebration of lights, music and community spirit
This weekend sees the welcome return of Birgu Fest, an annual event attracting crowds from across Malta and abroad. Over the following few days, Birgu will host a thoroughly unique celebration featuring live music, food stalls and its signature night-time display of candles on display in streets and in residential buildings throughout the city.
Tonight looks set to be an upbeat and party-like atmosphere, replete with food stalls and live music from Tea Crisis (7:30–9:30pm) and Fakawi (10–12pm). Birgu’s Victory Square will host the main celebrations, featuring a large stage and numerous food stalls and trucks ready to cater to a wide variety of tastes. Expect sumptuous local favourites and delicious fast food, accompanied by toe-tapping live music featuring new and well-known songs from a range of genres.
Tomorrow night sees the city transformed into a shining beacon of inviting candlelight, Birgu’s charming winding streets and thoroughfares warmly lit by suspended chandeliers and candles placed in windows and on steps and balconies, with the main stage featuring music by Karin Duff, Bernie and the Pod and The Travellers. From 5:30–8:30pm, the Citadella Folk Group will perform traditional folk music, with various other events taking place at venues including St John’s Tower, Couvre Porte, Birgu Ditch and Il-Mandraġġ, as well as in various churches, streets and fortifications.
Other events throughout the weekend include a short film festival, medieval re-enactment and a fire performance. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience Birgu like you’ve never seen it before!
