Secret Underground Valletta Garden Open to the Public after 400 years

Visitors can now experience monastic life firsthand and learn about the intriguing past that this enigmatic monastery has to offer. The initial purpose of St. Catherine’s Monastery, which was constructed in 1575 during the Knights of Saint John’s reign, was to care for female orphans.

According to the complex’s official website, visitors can take an audio tour while touring the rooms used for labour, prayer, restraint, and the “sleep of death.” Tours of St. Catherine’s Monastery’s subterranean realm will be offered by the Mysterium Fidei Museum.

Only three minutes’ walk from the Grandmaster’s Palace, the Mysterium Fidei Monastery is tucked away between Republic Street and Strait Street.
