Pierre Farrugia is passionate about outdoor activities such as kayaking, trekking and abseiling. He takes us on a stunning step by step trek from Fomm Ir-Riħ to Blata Tal-Melħ, which translates to ‘the salt rock’
Fomm Ir-Rih Bay in Malta is a pebbly, secluded beach located perfect for snorkelling close to Bahrija. From here, we set off on a mission to make it to Blata tal-Melh, a stretch of coastline where the cliffs drop down between one and 15 storeys. For this one you’d need to be equipped; wear comfortable clothing and hiking shoes. Ideally don’t come alone as some parts are a bit dangerous.
From the parking area, follow a trail and always look for paths that lead toward the sea; if not, then go down the very steep and slippery paths. As you could expect from such areas, the views are extremely picturesque, offering peace and tranquility.
From walking on gravel for a while, you will soon find yourself walking on rock, so no path is visible. But don’t panic, the route is very straight forward nonetheless.
Once you arrive at the Blata tal-Melh area you will come across many ropes tied to a metal spike and some steps carved into the rock.
You can attempt to avoid using the rope and walk around 100m on the edge but this will prove to be more dangerous. The rope is the only way down here. Make sure all your weight is placed on your feet not to stress the rope. Once you start making your way down, you will realise that it’s easier than it looks. If you do it slowly and carefully, it’s relatively doable.Think in advance a wear protective glove to avoid burning your fingers.
This will lead you to the famous Blata tal-Melh Crevasse jump. You can either take the plunge and jump approximately 1.5m across to continue or stop there. Sit down, enjoy the view and take it all in!
