The Manoel Theatre presents new original play ‘The Haunting’ this Halloween
“Stare at the dark too long and you will eventually see what isn’t there. Even the dead tell stories.” This Halloween, October 31, the Manoel Theatre in Valletta is presenting a new original play called ‘The Haunting: Dare To Face The Darkness’ as part of their Learning Programme ‘TOI TOI’.
This production comes from the mind of award-winning actor-director Stephen Oliver, who is the play’s writer and director. ‘The Haunting’ borrows inspiration from real ghost stories from Malta, hair-raising poetry, and theatrical excerpts. This combined with seat-of-the-pants effects and wrap-around sound makes for an experience so scarily immersive you’ll be afraid to sleep with the lights off. The cast will feature Edward Caruana Galizia, Victor Debono, Michael Mangion, Cassandra Spiteri, Edward Thorpe, and Isabel Warrington.
Ironically, the Manoel Theatre itself has its own share of supernatural mystery and rumour of ghost activity surrounding it. This comes to no surprise considering it is the third oldest working theatre in Europe, having been around for almost 300 years now. Some accounts have claimed to witness a shadowy figure sit down in Box 1, while performers have reported doors slamming open and closed deep backstage. However, the most common and perhaps most creepy rumour is that of a woman singing lullabies at night. Many believe the voice belongs to the mistress of Grand Master de Vilhena, who built the theatre in 1732.

The added factor of Manoel Theatre’s own eerie atmosphere will no doubt entice those among you who love horror. If you’re a bit of a scaredy cat, bring a friend, the biggest sceptic of them all if you must! Although keep in mind that the play is intended for audiences aged 11 or older.
‘The Haunting’ lasts 70 minutes, you can catch a showing either at 7:30 pm or 10:30 pm on Halloween night. So, make sure you get a ticket (and beware of Box 1), which you can purchase here.
