Malta's Beauty and Diversity Broadcast on German television
Under the name ‘Malta – The Sunny Island in The Mediterranean Sea’ well-known German TV-programme ‘Wunderschön’ broadcast the beauty and diversity of the Maltese archipelago.
The TV series was shot last year in August/September in Malta during a period of two weeks. It was broadcast on 23 August with a total of 600,000 viewers tuning in. Including reruns and online views, over one million viewers are expected to see the beauty of Malta on ‘Wunderschön’.
The show highlights the wide variety of experiences of the Mediterranean archipelago around Malta, Gozo and Comino – everything from cultural sightseeing, sporting activities or culinary delights. It includes a visit to a traditional bakery, Xaqqa Valley, Ggantija Temples, Xwejni Salt Pans as well as festivities of the Victory Day, the feast celebrated on 8 September.
‘Wunderschön’ (which translates to wonderful) is a television show by WDR, which is part of the first national public broadcast station ARD, in Germany. The show has been presenting cities, regions and areas of Europe and of the whole world for more than 15 years. It is the only 90 minute travel show on German television and therefore is a perfect opportunity to capture the diversity of Malta.
Mr Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, stated that “The MTA is very happy to be able to create exposure of Malta and Gozo on German TV stations, including ‘Wunderschön’ on WDR TV, “Zu Tisch auf ? Malta” on 3Sat TV, and the movie “Ein Sommer auf Malta“ on ZDF TV, as TV in all its forms remains a very powerful tool to showcase the beauty of the Maltese Islands to a wide international audience. TV productions allow a more in depth exposure to varied features of Malta and Gozo’s tourism experience. Germany is one of the top four source markets of tourism to Malta. In 2023 it is showing a positive performance as flight connectivity between German airports and Malta International Airport improves. In the first eight months of the year, 135,254 German tourists travelled to the Maltese Islands.”
“The German market remains of outmost importance for outbound tourism in Malta. The Government together with the Malta Tourism Authority will continue working hard to assure that German tourists explore the splendour of the Maltese Islands all year round. This is being done by enhancing and sustaining Malta’s air connectivity with German airports together with the marketing strategy in place aimed at cementing Malta’s visibility with the German people and beyond,” outlined Minister for Tourism Clayton Bartolo.
