Step into Villa Frere This Winter

Tucked away in the heart of Pietà, Malta, Villa Frere stands as a testament to the island’s rich history and cultural heritage. This neoclassical mansion, set amid beautifully landscaped gardens, exudes an air of timeless elegance and intrigue. With a rich history dating back to the 19th century, Villa Frere has borne witness to Malta’s transformation over the years, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and architecture admirers. Fortunately, you can catch a rare glimpse of the villa up close as Heritage Malta open the villa’s doors to the public once month.

The next open day will be held on 3 December.

A Journey Through Time

Villa Frere served as the home of John Hookham Frere, a British diplomat, poet, scholar, and philanthropist. Following his wife’s passing in 1831, he constructed expansive terraced gardens at the rear of the property, offering him sweeping vistas that stretched from Mdina to Valletta. From this vantage point, he could also gaze upon the Msida Bastion Cemetery, where his beloved wife rested in eternal peace.

Villa Frere, during this period, evolved into a haven for numerous intellectuals. Most notably, it was here that Mikiel Anton Vassalli engaged in discussions with Frere, contemplating the establishment of the Maltese language as a written and taught medium. Its elegant neoclassical design reflects the architectural tastes of that era, with stately columns, symmetrical facades, and meticulous attention to detail.

Sadly, the romantic narrative and the splendour of Villa Frere’s gardens gradually waned, and Frere passed away in 1846. Following his passing, the site fell into a state of disrepair and neglect. However, some four decades later, Villa Frere experienced a renaissance when it became the residence of Captain Edward Price. Nowadays the villa falls under the care of Heritage Malta, and The Friends of Villa Frere charity who work relentlessly to preserve the estate.

Architectural Marvel

There’s no denying Villa Frere’s architecture is a magnificent sight to behold. The neoclassical design, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman aesthetics, creates a sense of grandeur and sophistication. As you approach the villa, you’ll be greeted by a grand entrance framed by towering columns leading to an imposing façade. The interior is equally impressive, featuring ornate detailing, high ceilings, and beautifully decorated rooms that capture the spirit of a bygone era.

One of the most striking features of the villa is the captivating view it offers of Valletta and Marsamxett Harbour. From its elevated position, you can admire the picturesque panorama, making Villa Frere a popular location for artists and photographers.

Lush Gardens and Tranquil Ambiance

Beyond its architectural grandeur, Villa Frere boasts meticulously landscaped gardens that are a true horticultural marvel. The garden is a testament to the villa’s grandeur, adorned with a wide variety of flowers and mature trees, making it an oasis of tranquillity amid the bustling urban landscape of Pietà.

The beautiful garden highlights the importance of preserving green spaces in a densely populated area, and it offers a serene escape for visitors looking to reconnect with nature and savour a moment of peace.

Don’t miss the chance to explore this lush paradise and experience the serenity it offers. Join the next open day on December 3rd to wander through the gardens of Villa Frere and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature within a historic setting. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
