In the Footsteps of The Hospitallers: An Exhibit recounting the Knights of St John’s 900-year history
Given their several centuries of presence in Malta, the Knights of St. John have a unique affiliation with the Maltese Islands. Thus, they play a significant role in the rich history and culture of this nation. On Friday, December 1, The National Library of Malta held the opening of an exhibition called ‘In the Footsteps of the Hospitallers: 900 years of chivalry, faith, and charity’.
The exhibit primarily consists of publications from the library’s holdings as well as records from the Order’s archives that are kept at the National Library in Valletta. It is organised into six primary sections that feature the many locations where the Knights have had their headquarters throughout their history in chronological order. Maps are given focus because the display records the route taken by the Knights Hospitaller of St. John during the course of their 900-year existence. They also emphasise their function as a lay religious organisation, as well as their simultaneous purpose of helping the poor and defending the Catholic faith.
The exhibition was organised to mark the first anniversary since the passing of the Ven. Bailiff Fra’ John E. Critien on December 3, 2022. A few months before he passed away, Fra’ Critien was named Grand Prior of Rome and was a frequent researcher at the National Library. His family kindly provided personal artefacts for a section of the presentation. Moreover, the majority of the guests at the inauguration ceremony were members of Fra’ Critien’s family.
During the event, Ms Maroma Camilleri, the exhibition curator and deputy librarian, spoke to the guests, outlining the history of the show and the preparations that went into it. Ms. Cheryl Falzon, CEO and National Librarian, who declared the exhibition open, gave a quick welcome address after that.
For those interested in visiting ‘In the Footsteps of the Hospitallers’, the exhibition will remain open until March 30, 2024, and admission is free of charge. The opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, and Saturday from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm, except for every 3rd Saturday of the month, when it’ll be open from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm.
